The biggest celebration of all is Carnival.

Carnival is one of the defining events in the city’s cultural calendar, bringing performances, costumes, music and enormous public celebrations to Las Palmas. The city’s official tourism organisation describes it as one of the central expressions of Las Palmas as a multicultural and celebratory city.

Visitors travelling during Carnival should expect a very different Las Palmas from the one experienced during an ordinary week.

It can be enormously entertaining, but accommodation demand rises and parts of the city become much busier, so early planning is advisable.

Las Palmas also has a serious cultural side.

At the western end of Las Canteras stands Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, one of the city’s most recognisable modern buildings and an important venue for concerts and cultural events.

In the historic centre, Teatro Pérez Galdós provides another major venue, while Teatro Cuyás and Teatro Guiniguada add to a year-round programme of performing arts. The Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, commonly known as CAAM, focuses on contemporary art and reflects the city’s geographic position between Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Las Canteras provides another style of nightlife.

Here, the evening often begins while people are still on the beach. Swimmers leave the water, runners appear on the promenade and restaurant terraces begin filling for dinner.

Bars are scattered throughout the streets behind the beach, and the atmosphere varies from relaxed wine bars and cocktail venues to pubs and places with live music.

This makes Las Canteras particularly attractive for visitors who want nightlife without turning their entire evening into a major expedition. You can swim until late afternoon, shower at your hotel, have dinner and be out for drinks within the same small area.

Vegueta changes character in the evening.

During the day, visitors come for the cathedral, museums and historic streets. At night, restaurants and bars take over many of the streets around the old quarter.

The areas around Mendizábal and La Pelota are particularly associated with places to eat and drink.

Vegueta works well for visitors who prefer bar hopping to large nightclubs. Start with dinner, move to a terrace for drinks and continue through the narrow streets without needing any particular plan.
