For first-time visitors, the area around Las Canteras is often the easiest choice.
The beach stretches for roughly three kilometres along the western side of the northern part of the city. Behind it runs a long promenade filled with cafés, restaurants and everyday city life. The wider Puerto–Canteras area includes neighbourhoods such as Santa Catalina, Guanarteme and La Isleta, each with a slightly different atmosphere.
Staying here means that the Atlantic Ocean is rarely more than a few minutes away.
Hotels and apartments around the central section of Las Canteras work particularly well for travellers who want to combine sightseeing with regular beach time. You can have breakfast overlooking the sea, spend several hours exploring the city and return for an afternoon swim without having to make a special journey to the beach.
The area around Parque Santa Catalina is especially convenient. It lies between Las Canteras and the port and has shops, restaurants, cafés and good transport connections with other parts of Las Palmas.
At the southern end of Las Canteras, Guanarteme has developed a lively mixture of local residents, surfers, visitors, cafés and restaurants. The section of beach around La Cícer is particularly associated with surfing, while the striking Alfredo Kraus Auditorium marks the southwestern end of the bay.
At the opposite end, La Puntilla and the streets towards La Isleta feel more traditional. This is a good area for seafood restaurants and for visitors interested in exploring a part of Las Palmas that retains a stronger neighbourhood character.
