Swimming at Las Canteras
One of the most distinctive features of Las Canteras is La Barra, a natural volcanic reef that runs parallel to much of the beach.
The reef provides protection from Atlantic waves, creating calmer swimming conditions in several areas, particularly around Playa Chica and Playa Grande.
During low tide, parts of the reef become visible, and the sheltered waters can be particularly enjoyable for swimming and snorkelling.
However, conditions vary depending on the weather, tides and location. Always pay attention to the beach warning flags and lifeguard instructions.
The Best Areas for Beach Life
Las Canteras offers different experiences along its coastline.
Playa Grande, at the northern end, is particularly popular with families thanks to its wide sandy beach and generally sheltered waters.
Playa Chica offers a smaller, more intimate beach environment and is a lovely spot for swimming and exploring the underwater world.
At the southern end, La Cícer attracts surfers looking for Atlantic waves. This area is generally less suitable for relaxed swimming when the surf is strong.

Bring your towel, sunscreen and a good book, and find your favourite spot on the sand.
Sun loungers and parasols are available for rent in designated areas, while beach showers and other facilities make it easy to spend several hours by the water.
My tip: If swimming is your main priority, start at Playa Grande or Playa Chica. Visit in the morning for a more relaxed atmosphere, and bring a snorkelling mask to discover the fascinating marine life around the reef when conditions are suitable.
