Discover why Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is an excellent starting point for exploring the island, from the golden dunes of Maspalomas and the charming harbour of Puerto de Mogán to spectacular mountain landscapes and traditional Canarian villages.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is much more than a destination for a city break. With its beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, historic neighbourhoods and convenient transport connections, the island’s capital is also a wonderful base for discovering the rest of Gran Canaria.
Instead of changing hotels every few days, you can stay in Las Palmas and explore different parts of the island on day trips. From spectacular mountain scenery to lively seaside resorts, Gran Canaria offers an incredible variety of experiences within a relatively small geographical area.
Discover Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés
One of the most popular day trips from Las Palmas is a visit to Maspalomas, located on the island’s southern coast.
The famous Maspalomas Dunes create a spectacular landscape of golden sand stretching towards the Atlantic Ocean. Explore the designated walking routes, visit the historic lighthouse or relax on the beautiful beach.
Nearby Playa del Inglés offers a livelier atmosphere, with restaurants, shopping centres and plenty of opportunities for swimming and sunbathing.
The journey from Las Palmas takes approximately 45–60 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
Explore Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán is one of Gran Canaria’s most picturesque coastal villages.
Known for its charming marina, colourful buildings and narrow streets decorated with flowers, this beautiful destination offers a completely different atmosphere from the busy streets of Las Palmas.
Enjoy a relaxed lunch overlooking the harbour, explore the small shops or spend a few hours on the sheltered sandy beach.
Puerto de Mogán is approximately one hour from Las Palmas by car, making it a convenient destination for a full-day excursion.
Visit Roque Nublo and the Mountains
Gran Canaria’s mountainous interior is a wonderful contrast to its coastal resorts.
One of the island’s most famous natural landmarks is Roque Nublo, an impressive volcanic rock formation rising above the surrounding mountain landscape.
The area offers spectacular scenery, hiking opportunities and panoramic views across the island.
Combine your mountain excursion with a visit to Tejeda, a beautiful village known for its traditional architecture and mountain surroundings.
Mountain roads can be narrow and winding, so allow plenty of time for your journey. Check current access arrangements before visiting Roque Nublo, as reservations and restrictions may apply.
Discover Teror and Arucas
If you enjoy traditional Canarian towns, consider a day trip to Teror and Arucas.
Teror is famous for its beautiful historic centre, traditional wooden balconies and the impressive Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino.
Arucas is known for its striking Church of San Juan Bautista, attractive historic streets and local rum-making tradition.
Both towns are located relatively close to Las Palmas and can easily be combined into a single excursion.
Getting Around Gran Canaria
Renting a car provides the greatest flexibility, particularly if you want to explore mountain villages, scenic viewpoints and quieter beaches.
However, Gran Canaria also has an extensive intercity bus network operated by Global, connecting Las Palmas with many popular destinations.
Buses are a practical option for visiting Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Puerto de Mogán without renting a car.
My tip: Stay in Las Palmas for at least a week and alternate between city days and excursions. Spend one day exploring the southern beaches, another discovering the mountains and a third visiting traditional villages. You can then return to Las Palmas each evening to enjoy its restaurants, cultural attractions and relaxed city atmosphere.
