Las Palmas works surprisingly well for families, especially when you want a break from the beach. Two of the easiest attractions to combine are Poema del Mar and the Elder Museum of Science and Technology. Both are in the northern part of the city, close to Santa Catalina and within easy reach of Las Canteras.
I would keep these in mind not only for families with children, but also for the occasional cloudy, windy or unusually hot day when spending several hours on the beach suddenly feels less appealing.
Poema del Mar – much more than a rainy-day option
Poema del Mar is a large aquarium beside the port. Its exhibits take visitors through different marine environments, from freshwater ecosystems to reefs and deep ocean habitats. The scale is what makes the strongest impression: this is not a small aquarium that you walk through in half an hour.
One of the highlights is the enormous viewing window in the deep-sea section, where simply sitting and watching the marine life can become part of the visit. Children will obviously enjoy it, but adults who have even a passing interest in the ocean should not dismiss Poema del Mar as purely a family attraction.
Allow a few hours rather than squeezing it between other sights. Because it is close to the port and Santa Catalina, it is easy to combine with lunch, shopping or a walk back towards Las Canteras afterwards.
Elder Museum of Science and Technology
The Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología is a very different experience. Located by Parque Santa Catalina, it focuses on science and technology with exhibits designed to be explored rather than simply looked at.
This makes it particularly useful for families with curious children. Depending on the current exhibitions, the museum can cover subjects ranging from physics and space to transport, biology and technology. The interactive approach also helps if younger visitors have reached the point where another historic building is unlikely to impress them.
Can you visit both in one day?
Yes, although I would not rush them. Their locations make a combined day straightforward: visit one in the morning, stop for lunch around Santa Catalina or Las Canteras and continue with the other in the afternoon.
Personally, I would probably choose just one if the weather is beautiful and you only have a few days in Las Palmas. There is too much to enjoy outdoors. On a less beach-friendly day, however, doing both creates an easy full-day programme without spending much time travelling across the city.
Combine the attractions with Las Canteras
The real advantage is location. After either attraction, you are close enough to walk towards Las Canteras and finish the day beside the Atlantic. Families can have a museum or aquarium morning without sacrificing an afternoon swim, while adults can end with dinner or drinks along the promenade.
That combination is one of the things I like about Las Palmas: major visitor attractions do not necessarily require an entire day of logistics. Poema del Mar, the Elder Museum, Santa Catalina and Las Canteras all fit naturally together, leaving you free to decide how much structure you actually want in your day.
